Your role

Our Risk and Compliance Team – which is supervised by Theo Kindynis, the Firm's General Counsel - is currently seeking an experienced employment/HR lawyer to join our national risk management team. You will also work closely with the Head – Commercial Risk, our Deputy General Counsel and the partners and staff nationwide to develop, implement and promote the Firm's risk management policies with a focus on employment/HR issues.

The role offers an experienced employment/HR lawyer the opportunity to re-focus their skills within a law firm environment onto the business and compliance challenges of the Firm itself.  You will work with other lawyers and support staff whose focus is managing the legal and commercial risks that the Firm has across a range of locations and projects, while interacting with various partners and support staff to help manage the Firm's risk profile and compliance obligations. 

The role will give you an opportunity to expand your skills beyond employment/HR to a range of commercial and risk issues facing the Firm.

In this role, you will, within the Firm's overall risk management strategy and policies:

  • advise the Firm on a range of employment and HR issues (including employee rights issues, WHS, compliance with awards etc) that arise from time to time with respect to our staff, liaising with our Workplace and HR partners/lawyers and our internal Talent team
  • assist in the updating from time to time of our employment contracts for our staff
  • You will also play a key role in advising the Firm on its contract lawyering business, including relevant labour hire legislation
  • You will assist General Counsel in advising the Firm on outsourcing of lawyers, secondment issues, interpretation of restraint and similar provisions, employee confidentiality and privacy issues
  • Assist with the embedding of risk management in the culture of the firm;
  • Act as a contact point for day-to-day risk management queries especially related to employment and HR issues;
  • Assist with the development of risk management knowledge (including the intranet site).





What you need

We welcome applications from lawyers with:

  • Experience practising in employment law, industrial relations law, discrimination and WHS, ideally gained at a reputable Australian law firm
  • experience as a risk professional at a professional services organisation is desirable but not essential;
  • strong research, drafting and analytical skills;
  • strong project management skills, with the ability to co-ordinate a range of activities across the firm's locations;
  • the ability to build sustainable relationships and effectively influence behaviours, communicate and liaise with partners and staff at all levels in order to facilitate a risk aware and compliant culture;
  • the ability to work with various internal stakeholders and business support services, at an operational level including training and change management; and
  • resilience and the ability to ask probing questions where required.
