The Role

 

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Senior Tax Manager role is responsible for managing the firm's tax strategy and tax obligations, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, whilst providing strategic tax advisory to support the firm's commercial objectives and acting as a trusted advisor to practice group leaders and partners on tax matters. This is a full-time opportunity, open to our Sydney or Brisbane office with hybrid working arrangements available

 

Key responsibilities:

 

  • Lead the firm's tax affairs across all legal entities, ensuring compliance with income tax, GST, FBT, payroll tax, stamp duty, international tax, and transfer pricing requirements
  • Provide internal tax advice on a broad range of matters including profit taxes, capital and investment taxes, consumption and transaction taxes, employment taxes, and partner-related tax strategies
  • Manage tax audits, ATO assurance reviews, disputes, and objections, working with external consultants, auditors and regulatory bodies
  • Monitor legislative changes and assess their impact on operations, including ESG/sustainability tax implications and emerging reporting obligations
  • Develop firm-wide tax strategy, identify optimisation opportunities, and manage the tax governance framework aligned with ATO justified trust principles
  • Prepare tax reporting for Board and Audit Committee, and maintain tax forecasts to support financial planning and partner distributions
  • Lead automation and streamlining of tax compliance workflows, partnering with IT and external vendors to implement tax technology solutions
  • Provide leadership, coaching and development to team members, fostering a culture of performance excellence
  • Manage the firm's external tax advisory relationship and build collaborative partnerships across Finance and other internal teams

 

 

More About You

 

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

 

  • At least 10 years' experience in a senior tax role, preferably within a legal or professional services firm
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA, CA, or equivalent qualification is essential; formal professional tax qualifications desirable
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Australian tax legislation, including international tax matters, transfer pricing, and cross-border tax structuring
  • Demonstrated success in leading tax audits, liaising with tax authorities, and managing tax controversy and dispute resolution
  • Proven experience managing tax governance frameworks and tax risk management processes
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels of the firm
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and work effectively with senior stakeholders
