The Team

 

MinterEllison has a leading non-contentious (advisory and regulatory) and contentious (coverage and disputes) insurance and complex liability disputes practice across its Australian offices. MinterEllison also acts for corporate and government clients in providing legal and strategic advice on a broad range of legal issues and managing litigation in state and federal courts and tribunals.

 

The Role

 

An outstanding opportunity exists for an Associate or Senior Associate to join our Canberra Complex Liabilities, Insurance and Regulation team. The successful candidate will be working primarily with Partners Tom Galvin and Kemsley Brennan, along with other senior members of our Canberra and national teams.

 

In this role you will have responsibility for a range of contentious and non-contentious matters and will also assist with providing legal and strategic advice to clients. Depending on your level of experience, your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Managing a caseload of commercial and insurance litigated matters before the ACT Courts and other state and federal courts.
  • Assisting on broader insurance and commercial disputes.
  • Providing legal and strategic advice to corporate and government clients on insurance and commercial issues.
  • Appearing as a solicitor advocate where appropriate and instructing counsel in more complex matters.
  • For Senior Associates, supervising and reviewing the work of junior lawyers and contributing to client development and team capability initiatives.

  • have 4+ years’ post‑qualification experience in private practice at leading law firms;
  • have strong civil litigation experience;
  • have strong client focus and demonstrated ability to form enduring relationships with peers, clients and industry;

  • have experience appearing as a solicitor advocate, instructing counsel, and attending settlement conferences;
  • have strong technical and drafting skills;
  • are resilient and committed to excellence;
  • desire to work in a highly collaborative environment;
  • have strong attention to detail and effective time management skills; and
  • take pride in their work and who they work for.

 

Senior Associate candidates will also demonstrate the capability and interest to supervise junior lawyers and contribute to the ongoing development of the practice.
