Insurance Litigation - Lawyer or Associate

Work on complex legal disputes involving public liability, statutory compensation, professional liability, property and business interruption

MinterEllison is Australia’s largest law firm and provides legal and consulting services.

Purpose is at our core. We create lasting impacts with our clients, our people and our communities. Our teams collaborate and deliver to our Purpose, and consistently work to embed our values into everyday actions. Clients rely on our expertise and insights. They value our responsive, creative and commercial approach. We are curious by nature, diverse in our disciplines and authentic in our relationships.

Diversity and inclusion is at the core of our Purpose and informs the way we work with each other, our clients and in the community. We know that when we bring together diversity of thinking, skills, experience, gender identity, backgrounds and orientations, we get better results.

Your role

A great opportunity currently exists for a Lawyer or Associate with 1-4 years of post-admission years of experience to join our Perth Insurance and Corporate Risk team.  The Perth team is led by Mark Williams and Melissa Joyce, who are nationally recognised for their pre-eminence in insurance law. We have a diverse and well-established client base, including public liability, professional indemnity and workers' compensation insurers, ASX–and foreign–listed resource and mining companies, self-insured corporations and not-for-profit organisations.  We advise them on public, professional, product and employers' liability claims, workers' compensation claims, employment practices liability claims, discrimination claims, defamation allegations and many other insurable liabilities.

While some experience in advising insurers on policy coverage is desirable, we also recognise the depth of experience that can be acquired working in a plaintiff-focussed practice.

What you need

We welcome applications from lawyers who:

  • have at least 1 year of technical experience with public liability, employers' liability and workers' compensation claims (with some technical experience in professional indemnity, property and business interruption and/or employment practices liability desirable, but not essential);
  • understand and apply reserving philosophies in the insurance industry;
  • demonstrate proficiency in the interpretation and application of the Civil Liability Act, Workers' Compensation and Injury Management Act and common law of torts and contract;
  • are familiar with District Court, Supreme Court and Federal Court civil procedure and who preferably have experience arguing (or prepared submissions for) disputed interlocutory applications;
  • can explain complex issues to clients clearly and concisely;
  • have unwavering attention to detail and technical excellence;
  • have a strong client focus and demonstrated ability to form enduring relationships with clients and industry experts
  • thrive in a highly collaborative environment
  • take pride in their work and who they work for.
