The Role

This is an exciting full-time opportunity to take ownership of the firm's tax strategy and obligations, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. You will provide strategic tax advisory support to the firm's commercial objectives and partners on tax matters, while also leading and delivering select finance-related projects. This role is open to either our Sydney or Brisbane office with hybrid working arrangements available.

Key responsibilities include:

Tax Compliance & Technical Management

  • Lead the firm's tax affairs across all legal entities, ensuring compliance with income tax, GST, FBT, payroll tax, stamp duty, and international tax requirements, including transfer pricing and cross-border structuring.
  • Manage tax compliance for international offices and provide internal tax advice across income, capital, consumption, employment, and partner-related tax matters.
  • Oversee the preparation and timely submission of all tax documents, manage tax audits and ATO assurance reviews, and coordinate dispute resolution with external counsel.
  • Monitor legislative changes in tax law and advise on their operational impact, including ESG, sustainability, and emerging reporting obligations.
  • Prepare year-end tax distribution statements, maintain tax forecasts to support financial planning and partner distributions, and manage tax effect accounting.

Tax Strategy & Governance

  • Develop and implement a firm-wide tax strategy aligned with business objectives, identifying tax optimisation opportunities within the firm's risk appetite.
  • Manage the tax governance framework in line with ATO justified trust principles and maintain tax policies and procedures.
  • Prepare tax reporting for the Board and Audit Committee and implement continuous tax controls monitoring coordinated with external assurance reviews.

Tax Compliance Systems & Process Automation

  • Lead projects to automate and streamline tax compliance workflows, partnering with IT and external vendors to implement tax technology solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort through process redesign and ensure all system changes affecting tax are appropriately tested and documented.

Project Management

  • Support select Finance projects, contributing to governance, prioritisation, and resource planning, with regular status reporting to the Finance Director.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve the Finance team's systems, processes, and controls, developing business cases and managing implementation.

Leadership & Stakeholder Management

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and feedback to team members, building a high-performance culture with responsibility for succession planning and performance management.
  • Manage external tax advisers and foster collaborative relationships across internal and external networks to optimise business outcomes.

More About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • At least 10 years' experience in a senior tax role, preferably within a legal or professional services firm.
  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • CPA, CA, or equivalent qualification — this is essential.
  • Formal professional tax qualifications, which are highly desirable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Australian tax legislation, including experience with international tax matters, transfer pricing, and cross-border tax structuring.
  • Demonstrated success in leading tax audits and liaising with tax authorities, including tax controversy and dispute resolution experience.
  • Proven experience managing tax governance frameworks and tax risk management processes.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead projects in a professional services or legal sector environment.
